A weight gain of 0.006 grams to 2000 tons... And that in 'just' 2 millennia. No other organism achieves that feat except the Giant Sequoia! Every beginning is small, and that certainly applies to the largest tree in the world. In this blog, we will show you how fast (or is it slow?) the sequoia tree grows.

Naturally, the growth rate (of everything that grows) depends on the circumstances... Sunlight, temperature, water, and nutrients are the key parameters for trees. If all of these are optimal, a sequoia tree can grow up to 50 cm per year in height. If the conditions are less favorable, the growth rate is significantly lower or even comes to a halt. There exist bonsai sequoias that are 50 years old and are still less than a meter tall. This is the survival strategy of tree seedlings. They can wait for years on the forest floor until a gap in the canopy emerges that they can fill.

The advantage of this steady growth is that we have years to enjoy growing trees in a pot. Due to the limited root space, the growth is considerably slower than under optimal conditions in the open ground. The tree in the picture below was kept in a relatively small pot of 1.5 liters and is now 2 years old.

Once the roots are free in the ground, the growth becomes significantly faster. And what few people know, is that the giant sequoia thrives in the European climate. Before the ice ages, its ancestors could be found in large parts of Europe, including the Netherlands and Germany. Part of the lignite that is currently burned in power plants contains sequoia trunks! In Italy and the United States, even older, petrified sequoia stumps from 250 million years ago can be found.

So, it's about time to assist this living fossil with it reintroduction on the European continent. In the 19th century, this process has already been started. The tallest living sequoia tree in Europe (planted around 1860) is growing in England and has already reached a height of 58 meters. In the Netherlands, the largest living sequoia tree can be found in Beekbergen and has reached a height of 43 meters!
